Why Buy Foreclosed Homes?

What is the big attraction with these types of properties lately? If you have come here out of curiosity and a burning desire to answer these questions, here is the West Michigan Foreclosure Tour's take on the subject.

Basically, a foreclosure home represents a real estate investment opportunity, through which you may be able to get a great deal on a home (relative to the market value). As you've probably heard, we are currently seeing record numbers of home foreclosures in this country, largely as a result of the sub prime mortgage fiasco that came to a head in 2007. So the fact that there are many more foreclosures on the market today is one reason you hear so much about buying a foreclosed home as an investment strategy or perhaps your primary home.

You see, when a bank forecloses on a home, they want to sell it off as quickly as possible. Banks are in the business of lending money to people — they are not in the business of managing and marketing homes. So the bank will often sell a foreclosure property through a local real estate broker, in order to sell it more quickly. In most cases, you can pay less than the home's true market value, and in some cases, you can pay significantly less than market value. So why look at foreclosures in 2008? Because there will likely be more foreclosed homes on the market in cities across the U.S. this year than any other year in history. If you've been reading the newspaper or watching the news on television lately, this won't come as any surprise to you.
